Nellie V. Cannon, 89, of Rural Cambridge, Il and formerly of Neponset, Il. died at 6:50 A.M. Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at Hillcrest Home. Nellie was born January 29, 1920 in Grayson Co., Ky. the daughter of Benjamin and Edith (Layman) Hawkins. She married Henry Harvie Cannon on February 26, 1938 in Leitchfield, Ky. The couple moved to Neponset following WWII in 1946. Harvie died in November 1994. Nellie was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother Murrell Hawkins, four sisters Lola Walters, Frances Mund, Nona Williams and Daisy Presley. Surviving are three sons David (Diana) Cannon of Cambridge, Il., Roger (Sherry) Cannon of Marengo, Il., and Allan (Margaret) Cannon of Franklin, N.H., seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister Gladys Duvall of Leitchfield, Ky.
Nellie was employed at Harper-Wyman for 17 ½ years retiring in 1982. She was a member of the Neponset Congregational Church and the Eastern Star in Sheffield, Il. She enjoyed quilting, baking and spending time with her family.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. Monday July 20, 2009 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Rev. William R. Toliver of the Neponset Congregational Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Floral Hill Cemetery, Neponset, Il. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the First Congregational Church of Neponset or the Buda Rescue Squad.
