Obituary for Dale German

Dale German 96, of Kewanee, died Thursday, December 27, 2018 at the Hammond Henry Long Term Care Center, Geneseo. “On October 16, 1922, at 2:00 AM, a son was born to Margaret (Warner) and Floyd German in Burns Township, IL. They named him Floyd Dale. Since his father’s name was Floyd David, he was not a “Junior,” a fact which contributed to many complexities and mis-sent mail throughout Floyd Dale’s life.” Thus begins an informal autobiography that Dale wrote several years ago for his family. Any sentences in quotes are taken directly from that autobiography.

Dale grew up in the Burns Township area and in 1928 began his education at King School. He had one classmate, Pauline Michaels, during his entire eight years there, before entering Cambridge High School from which he graduated in 1940.

“In the fall of 1940, I enrolled at the University of Illinois. Originally, I had planned to major in journalism. However, it was required to have two years of undergraduate work before enrolling in the School of Journalism, so I enrolled in the College of Commerce. After two years I had decided to continue in the major of accountancy.”

After three years at the U of I, in 1943, Dale was drafted out of the ROTC program and into the U.S. Army, Signal Corps Division. He served at various stateside bases and in the fall of 1945 was on board a Liberty ship bound for Okinawa when the entire ship was unloaded due to refrigeration issues on board. In June of 1946, he was discharged from the army and that fall returned to complete his last year at U of I, graduating in 1947.

On September 5, 1948 (“the luckiest day of my life”), Dale wed Hazel Kuster at the First Presbyterian Church in Kewanee, IL. She preceded him in death on July 8, 2002 (“the saddest day of my life”). In describing the beginning of their courtship, Dale wrote, “There was a little girl who went to Galva High School…by the name of Hazel Kuster. I sorta had my eye on her and in the summer of 1936 I went to her home, marched up to the door, and asked her mother if I could speak to Hazel. I asked Hazel to go to Atkinson to a ball game with me…I was playing ball with a local softball team and we bet a kiss on the outcome of the game. That was a bet that one couldn’t lose and the loser did pay!”

After graduating from Illinois, Dale went into business and farming with his brothers. He and his brothers operated German’s Sales and Service on Route 81 (German’s Corners) where they sold Massey Ferguson and New Idea as well as some shorter lines. In the fall of 1986, they retired and the business was closed. Dale loved being in the farming business and, after retirement, enjoyed seeing former customers and their families. Many adults shared memories with him of being kids who looked forward to accompanying their dad to the store for parts because that meant that they got a pop and a candy bar!

Dale was a loving husband, father and grandfather who was the most patient and honest of men. In retirement, he spent many hours on various building projects with his grandsons, some more memorable than others! He also enjoyed golf, bridge, traveling with Hazel, building and flying radio-controlled airplanes, computers, and his beloved coffee group. At the time of his passing, he had his computer in his room at Hammond Henry Hospital Long Term Care and was still taking care of his affairs!

Those who will miss him greatly and are left to honor his memory include a daughter, Kris (Cal) Atwell, Geneseo, IL, two grandsons and their wives – Ryan (Anna Peterson), Medicine Lake, MN, and Jonathan (Mandy Brothers), Grand Junction, CO, a sister-in-law, Maurine German, Forsyth, IL, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Carrol (Gus) and Sam, and a sister-in-law, Jean German.

Private Graveside Service will be Monday, January, 7, 2019, at Pleasant View Cemetery, Kewanee. Memorial Services will follow at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 7, 2019, at the First Presbyterian Church, Kewanee, with the Rev. Dr. James Breed officiating. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Kewanee or to Hammond Henry Hospital Foundation, Geneseo. Please leave an online condolence for Dale’s family at www.schuenemantumblesonfuneralhome.com.
