Obituary for Joseph Schwigen

Joseph E. Schwigen, 87, of Kewanee, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at Royal Oaks Care Center. Joseph was born October 21, 1931 in Kewanee, the son of Michael and Margie (Lampson) Schwigen. Joseph is survived by his wife, Donna Murphy-Schwigen, Kewanee; three sons, Joel Fesler-Schwigen, Keokuk, IA, Randy (Becki) Schwigen, Mendota, IL, Mickey (Melissa) Schwigen, Kewanee; six grandchildren, Nicole (Trent) Kinard, Joseph Daniel “JD” (Kelly) Fesler, Daulton Burwell, Leih Schwigen, Meaghan (Matthew) Counihan, and Madison Schwigen. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Betty Clair; three brothers, Michael in infancy, Bob, and Richard “Jitters”.
Joseph served his country in the US Army from 1948-1952, during the Korean War. He was an operating engineer for 45 years at McNeill Asphalt. Prior to McNeill’s he was a truck driver. He was a member of the Milan American Legion 569 for 51 years; he was also a member of the VFW Post 8078, Kewanee for 60 years. Joseph loved telling stories and having a beer with friends. He enjoyed canning, especially hot peppers. He loved camping along the Mississippi River in Oquawka, IL. Joseph especially loved spending time with his family and friends.
Visitation will be from 9:00 am – 11:00 am, Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home. Private Graveside Services will be held at Pleasant View Cemetery. Military Rites will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Memorials may be made to the family for a fund to be established. Please leave an online condolence for Joseph’s family at
